Orthopaedic Engineering

Developing solutions for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders is a challenging yet exciting field of research. It requires the integration of multiple disciplines such as biology, medicine, statistics, computer science and of course, engineering. BERG works together with both industry and orthopaedic surgeons to research and improve methods of surgical planning, navigation and reconstruction. Examples of past, current and future planned projects include:

  • Digital image processing for the automated segmentation of medical image volumes such as CT or MRI scans.
  • Computational modelling of anatomy in order to estimate the original, healthy states of musculoskeletal pathologies.
  • Machine learning for the classification of discrete bone geometries for population-based implant design.
  • Automatic, patient-specific implant generation from estimates of healthy geometry.
  • Development and pre-validation of cost-effective parametric implant designs.
  • Machine learning for the prediction of implant failure from a database of morphological measurements and finite element analyses results.
  • Investigation of additive manufacturing technologies for the production of articulating joint implants.
  • Biomechanical simulation of physiological loads and activities for the investigation of the effect of implant design on joint kinematics.
